19th Combo - [Video]

[There's a huge grin on Lloyd's face, the kind of grin you only give when you're pleased and excited and everything is right in the world, or when something amazing is happening.]

Hey, everyone! Guess who's officially an adult today!

[That's right, it's his birthday - or the one that he and Dirk celebrate. The only one he's ever known, so the only one that counts as far as he's concerned.]

Oh, yeah, by the way, Kanaya, I finished that necklace for you! When do you wanna meet up?

[He... hasn't realized yet that Kanaya is gone. Late with your gifts again, Lloyd. Always late. :/ ]

But man, I've been looking forward to this birthday so much! Now that I'm eighteen, I don't have to go back to school!

Huh? What's wrong with getting something to drink?

[Not being defensive. He really is that clueless.]

Nothing, it's just...[wry little chuckle.] I'm guessing you never saw anybody get drunk, huh?

[Oh, Lloyd. The things Zack could teach you.]

Oh. You mean alcohol.

[Lloyd will forever by confused by references to "a drink" meaning something alcoholic.]

No, I've seen people get drunk, but don't worry. I don't drink alcohol. Ugh, Zelos tried to give me some once, even though I was too young, and it tasted horrible.

[He doesn't realize there have been other times he's had alcohol that didn't taste that bad.]

Yeah, most of that stuff tastes terrible, but there's some that doesn't. You've gotta be careful, especially since you can get drinks now without getting in trouble.

[Mostly, anyway. Just one more thing about being an adult.]

It's still bad for you, though, right? Like you said, that's how you get drunk. Maybe I should avoid it even though I'm old enough.

Sounds like a good idea. Cause lemme tell you, hangovers suck no matter how old you are.

[Is he speaking from experience? ...In more ways than one.]

I plan to take your word for it.

[But sometimes the best of plans... Well, with friends like some of the ones Lloyd has, we'll see how long that plan lasts.]

What's a hangover feel like, anyway?

They're kinda hard to explain...[How to word this...ah!] The little ones are like really bad headaches, but the big ones....okay, take the worst headache you've ever had, for whatever reason, and make it ten times stronger and put dizziness in that mess, too. If it's really bad, any kind of light or sound is gonna make it worse, and if you try to get up without help, you'll fall over.

[deeefiinitely speaking from experience. And with some luck, Lloyd's plans last longer than Zack's ever did. That was one messy night, that's for sure.]

[Lloyd winces at the description.]

Ouch. Man, why would anyone want to get drunk if that's what's going to happen? That sounds like it's even worse than being sick.

[Blink. Waaiit. Lloyd's starting to catch on.]

You sound like you know firsthand.

Yeah, well...sometimes it's worth it. Helps you forget stuff you can't deal with right then. That's why people do it.

[But only sometimes and--oh crud. Should have expected that.]

I've had one or two, but sometimes I had to drag my mentor up to bed and deal with him being hungover the next morning after he drank himself under the table. I can tell you that doing that is no fun.

[Especially if it was Angeal or Sephiroth. They made for terrible hangover patients.]

But memories are important. They're part of who we are. What could people want to forget?

[Zack, you're lucky that Lloyd is such a trusting soul, because that excuse? Well, a lot of other people would be skeptical right now~]

Huh. You'd think he'd learn better.

I dunno, man. Probably different for everybody, I guess. Some memories aren't good when you get down to it.

[He's lucky and grateful Lloyd's not asking questions, really! Hard not to be. He's terrible at explaining things.]

You'd think, but every single time there was a card game, he'd have one too many and just...fall right out of his chair. Never won any, either. [A snicker here; man, those were the days...]

Even my worst memories aren't something I'd want to give up. [He shakes his head.] I don't know. I don't think I'll ever understand.

[A smile starts to tug at Lloyd's mouth.]

Have you tried taking the glass away from him?

Probably better off that way, really. There's some things you don't want to understand.

[At that suggestion, Zack just grins and shakes his head.]

Never stopped trying. Though the one time I managed, he started drinking right from the bottle. He was pretty determined, I can say that much.

[Lloyd grins at the image in his head of Zack playing tug of war with Angeal over a glass of alcohol.]

Then take the bottle, too!

[At the memories this conversation is bringing, Zack just laughs. Gods, he needed this...]

I tried! He actually growled at me when I got close! Mentor's can be scary when they're growling, you know?

How scary is drunk growling compared to normal growling? Because Kratos is scary enough when he growls, and I've never seen him drunk.

It's worse. Way worse. When they're not drunk, you at least know what they're gonna do when they stop growling. When they are....it's kinda hard to predict 'em. [Pause and a snicker a moment later] Though they're easier to dodge. Drunks are kinda clumsy.

Man, I hope I never see him get drunk, then.

[A slight pause.]

Huh. I can't even imagine Kratos being clumsy. He's just one of those people who's always in control of himself, you know?

Trust me, you don't want to. It's messy.

[A nod; oh, he knows.]

Yeah, I know the type. My best friend's the same kinda guy, but when he gets drunk...he's just like a sack of flour or something. Can barely sit up straight, let alone walk. It's kinda funny, actually.

What do you do when he's like that? Do you have to carry him home?

Uh-huh. Carry him home and put him to bed, then get out of there fast. He doesn't remember the drinking in the morning, but he sure gets grumpy when he wakes up with a hangover.

[And a grumpy General of ShinRa is a terrible thing to be around. Probably worse than Kratos at times.]

[Okay, now Lloyd is trying to picture himself carrying Kratos home.

Snrk.]

He'd probably be pretty grumpy if he realized you carried him home, too.

[Ah, the lovely mental images. Zack's struggling to not burst out laughing at the moment. Good memories, these.]

Nah, he found out the next morning when someone told him. He was a little grumpy about it, but I think it was his pride being hurt or something. He didn't glare me into a hole or anything like he usually would.

[snicker. It's obvious Zack's not afraid of that.]

If he ever does get really mad at you, you can always hide out at my place.

[He wouldn't mind having a friend spend the night, and yeah, he wants Zack to stay alive.]
