14th Combo - [Dream]

The dream starts off simply enough, with the figure of a glowering forevveraglub standing with arms crossed. The scenery around him is indistinct, perhaps a field or a forest. rainbowpalette, a girl, is standing in front of him. Neither one looks happy, but the girl is particularly upset. Eridan snaps something at Kanaya, who looks like she's almost in tears.

For a moment, the dream fuzzes and goes out of focus and...

Lloyd leans forward, smiling at Kanaya as he holds her protectively. "Don't worry," he says. "I don't care what Eridan says about the future. I'll make sure it never happens."

"Thank you, Lloyd." Kanaya smiles back, arms around his neck. "You're a really good friend."

And watching them draw close, seeing how happy they are, the only thing Eridan can do is sob. If only he'd been nicer to his friend, that could have been him in her arms!

What is a dwarf?

A dwarf is another race, like humans or elves or trolls. Most dwarves live underground, but my Dad built a house on the surface so he could raise me. He's a really, really good smith!

What about you? What's your dragon like?

Well... For most of my life she was asleep! She talked to me in my dreams. But she was very excitable and fun!

Wait a minute. Would that mean your dragon could see your dreams and thoughts? Maybe I don't want my Dad to do that. [He laughs a little, rubbing the back of his neck.] That could be really embarrassing!

It is kind of a long story, but she wasn't allowed to hatch from her egg.

Not allowed to hatch? That sounds awful.

But at least she still had someone she could talk to. If it were me, I'd be glad for that. I can't imagine what it would be like to be completely alone for all that time. It sounds like she's lucky she found you.

She did hatch. But then she died.

[Wow, she must have been stuck in her shell a really long time if she was that old.]

[Kind of more complicated than that but WWHATEVVER.]

[Thinking of it as the inevitability of old age is much easier for Lloyd to deal with than thinking of it as fate. He nods sympathetically and leaves it at that.]

That's too bad...

But at least you still got to talk to her, and she still got to be your mom. I bet she was amazing.
